This “Kinky Boots” cake won Best in Show, and we can’t say we’re surprised
Kinky Boots already has six Tony Awards under its belt, but now it can add one more award to the list. This Kinky Boots cake won the Best in Show at the New York Cake Show over the weekend, and we think Cyndi Lauper would be all about it. The cake, made by Brooklyn baker Ashley Holt, is a life-size replica of the iconic red boot, complete with edible gelatin sequins. It’s hard not to love anything sparkly, but something sparkly you can have for dessert? Even better.
There’s one tiny catch, though: There’s not actually any cake inside the boot. It was made over the course of four months to be admired, not devoured. Bummer, huh?
Holt said she slept only 30 minutes the night before the show just to get everything, from the heel to the laces, done in time. “The level of talent under this roof is phenomenal, so it is a humongous honor,” she told the Associated Press. Other cakes at the show followed the Broadway theme, too. There were cakes for Wicked, The Lion King, Beauty and the Beast, Phantom of the Opera, and even Little Shop of Horrors.
Holt, 29, owns Brooklyn’s Sugar Monster Sweets, but you may recognize her from Cake Boss or TLC’s Next Great Baker, which she won in 2012.
The other cakes were just as stunning.
Holt said of her last-minute cake making skills, “I live for this push and this energy; it’s so much fun.” She added, “Sure, I would rather relax and do my cake over a couple of months, but there’s something about that last minute pressure that I really live for.” Fellow procrastinators can definitely relate.
Holt’s other cakes are amazing, too.

The Kinky Boots cake wasn’t the only one she had to make either.
Since she won last year, too, with a Pizza Rat cake, she had to replicate it again for this year’s show.
“I was afraid that maybe mine [from last year] was too weird,” Holt explained, but reinforced that she was happy she went with her gut. “I was so proud for stepping out of the box and diving deep into my own creativity and pulling something original out of my brain and being recognized for it,” she said.
Whatever Holt’s doing, it’s obviously working. Now we just need to figure out how to get our hands on a Pizza Rat cake for our next party.
