All the ways Kimmy Schmidt perfectly describes being single and struggling in your early 20s (even if she’s 30)
Kimmy Schmidt is seriously unbreakable. Not only is the show Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt amazing and hilarious to watch, but the lead character perfectly describes what it’s like to be single and struggling in your 20s, even if she’s actually 30.
Her lack of money
Okay, so Kimmy never graduated high school and her mole money was stolen, so there is a reason she’s broke, but so is every twentysomething trying to make a living. Ugh, it’s the worst.
Candy, candy, candy
Now that you’ve moved out (or maybe still live with your parents) and have your first “big girl job,” you can do whatever you want, which means eating candy for every meal! Sadly, this food choice does get old, when you realize that all you really want is a home-cooked meal, but you still can’t cook!
Alcohol is NOT her friend
Once you are past college, you quickly learn that drinking, although going out might be fun, actually sucks. You will also learn that a night in is way more fun than a night out — it just is. Kimmy sums it up perfectly, “Ugh, alcohol… tastes good.”
An optimistic outlook on life
When you are young and freshly out of school, you really think the world is your oyster, which is technically is, but it is HARD work. Kimmy is SO happy about everything in life, which is how you should be before you’ve had to work long days, for what feels like forever.
Thinking any job is a good job
Qualified or not, the show’s main character gets excited about any job opportunity. In reality, every job is not a good job, but any way to make money when you’re still young enough to not care too much, does work.
Wants to be an adult, but dresses like a child
This is probably the story of too many of our lives. Who wants to wear a suit and tie in order to be taken seriously? Can’t we just dress in leggings and bright colors and not have people assume we have the maturity of a five year old? It is so annoying. Kimmy however, rocks her brights and still kicks butt so we are going to opt for wearing mini backpacks (aka a middle school flashback) instead of wearing high heels or a full suit.
Thinking that cycling will cure everything
Ya, this won’t cure everything, but we’ve all fallen victim to the wonders that are cycling classes. On the bright side, you will feel healthier after a class, just don’t take it too seriously, like Kimmy and Jacqueline do.
So many complicated relationships
Kimmy is new to the dating game, because she was trapped in a bunker for 15 years, but as we watch her navigating a love triangle, having a boyfriend, and accidentally saying “I love you,” it all feels VERY familiar. Dating is way too complicated.
Trying to stay young with youth lingo
If you’re in your 20s, you’re not old by any standard, but you do feel older. It’s totally insane to try and talk like teenagers do, or learn what the newest abbreviation means, but we all do it, hopefully in less embarrassing ways than Kimmy does.
Puppies and kittens can make it all better
Even if working computers isn’t your strong suit (like Kimmy), watching a cat or dog video, or simply looking at puppy pictures will instantly brighten your mood. If Kimmy does it, you should do it.
Having friends who are hot messes
You wouldn’t be a 20 something without a squad of hot messes. Figuring life out, messing up and struggling, wouldn’t be half as fun if your friends were “normal.” Let your hot mess out and just embrace it!
Kimmy Schmidt is an amazing role model. Sure, she isn’t always the savviest person, and she believes everything is rainbows and sunshine, but overall she’s pretty badass. She perfectly describes being in your 20s and trying to figure it all out… even though she is technically 30!
