Here’s why people are upset about this photo of Kim Kardashian’s son

Over the weekend, proud mom Kim Kardashian shared a photo of Saint West in his car seat, which —  of course — elicited the natural reactions of “OMG” and “AWW!” because he’s the cutest tot on the planet. But many moms weren’t pleased about Kim’s photo of Saint, and began mommy-shaming her over his car seat.

Kim posted the shot of Saint to her Facebook page, but it quickly elicited some negative feedback due to Saint’s forward-facing car seat. Saint, who is 18 months old, appears to be seated in violation with a recent California law that states children under two years of age must be in a rear-facing car seat.

Commenters were quick to point out that if the photo was taken in California, Saint should be in a rear-facing car seat. However, children who weigh more than 40 pounds or are above 40 inches tall are exempt from the law, and only Saint’s parents and doctors would know that information. It’s impossible to tell by this photo how tall Saint is or how much he weighs.

It’s also possible that Kim had Saint forward-facing to snap the adorable picture, and then switched his car seat to be rear-facing, or had made the switch just prior to taking the photo as they were exiting the car.

Basically, we just don’t know.

Kim has not addressed the controversy herself, but the bottom line is mommy-shaming is never cool, and especially when we don’t have all the facts.

Parenting is hard, and most parents are simply doing their best. Let’s use this as a reminder to support each other more and judge each other less.
