Kim Kardashian backtracked after trying to defend Kanye West’s slavery comments
In a preview for Sunday night’s (December 9th) episode of Keeping Up with the Kardashians, Kim Kardashian tries to rewrite Kanye West’s controversial May 2018 rant on TMZ. During the now-infamous TMZ rant, Kanye threw his support behind Donald Trump and said that slavery “sounds like a choice.” Kim filmed a segment for her family’s reality show where she misquotes her husband as a way to justify his comments. A day after the clip aired, Kim admitted to misquoting him and said the segment will not appear during the upcoming episode.
Here’s what happened:
May 2018: Kanye went on TMZ and said that slavery was a choice.
"When you hear about slavery for 400 years, for 400 years?" Kanye asked. "That sounds like a choice. Like, you was there for 400 years and it's all of y'all?"
December 6th, 2018: Kim is seen in a preview clip for KUWTK trying to explain Kanye’s behavior, though in doing so, she completely misquotes him.
"He didn't say slavery is a choice, he was saying if you're gonna still be enslaved for another 400 years then that's some bullshit," Kim said in the show.
Kim went on to defend Kanye’s TMZ rant by essentially saying that Kanye doesn’t articulate his thoughts well.
“I always know what Kanye’s intentions are and what he’s trying to say, but I also know that they’re gonna write a headline and people are gonna assume that that’s exactly what you said and what you meant,” she added. (So his verbiage is the writers fault, Kim?)

Kim also admitted that she was “hysterically crying” when she heard the interview, but added that Kanye loves to get “ramped up.”
"When he gets ramped up, he can't control what he says, he can't let it go," she said. "He loves being ramped up. He's like 'I feel powerful when I'm ramped up. I don't want to be so suppressed. Yeah, I say crazy shit but I've always said crazy shit. That's why I'm Kanye."'
December 7th, 2018: Kim admits that she mistakenly misquoted her husband.
Someone in the Kardashian camp told TMZ that Kim’s conversation in the preview clip “was never approved for the episode because when Kim watched it back, she realized it was inaccurate and not reflective of what happened at TMZ that day.” E! has deleted the preview clip and that scene will not appear in the December 9th episode of the show.
Although Kim admitted to mistakenly misquoting her husband and now appears to be aware of what he actually said that day at TMZ, it’s unclear how she feels about Kanye’s statement and the pain it caused for the communities he claims to be part of.
