Kim Kardashian has helped free 17 prisoners in the past 90 days—FYI

By now, there’s no question that Kim Kardashian West is committed to criminal justice reform. In June 2018, her repeated advocacy for Alice Marie Johnson, who was serving life in prison for a nonviolent drug offense, led to Johnson’s release. Since then, Kardashian has continued to fight for others who have been unjustly incarcerated, and she’s even studying law in order to become a better advocate. And we just learned that she’s apparently helped 17 non-violent offenders get released over the past 90 days.

TMZ reports that Kardashian has been quietly funding the 90 Days of Freedom project—a legal campaign created by her lawyer, Brittany K. Barnett, and MiAngel Cody, an attorney with the Decarceration Collective. Thanks to Barnett and Cody’s efforts (and Kardashian’s donations), 17 people have been released from prison in the past three months after receiving life sentences. And TMZ notes that the campaign is still working with other clients. The campaign is part of the Buried Alive Project, which was co-founded by Barnett and seeks to do away with life sentences without parole for drug offenses.

Jeffrey Stringer of Florida is one of Barnett’s most recent clients to win his freedom. According to NBC News, on May 3rd, a judge ruled that Stringer was eligible for release under the recently implemented First Step Act. Stringer has served 22 years of a life sentence, which he received for manufacturing and intending to distribute cocaine.

Kardashian celebrated the ruling in a May 3rd tweet, writing: "He served too much time but it gives me so much joy to fund this life saving work."

In addition to Stringer, TMZ notes that the Buried Alive Project has helped free Jamelle Carraway, Eric Balcom, and Terrence Byrd—who were all sentenced to life in prison for drug charges.

Kardashian continues to prove that she’s genuinely invested in helping others and making concrete changes to our criminal justice system. We can’t wait to see what she does next.
