Kim Kardashian has defended her use of a surrogate — not that she should have to
In today’s edition of “something a woman should never have to do,” Kim Kardashian defended her decision to use a gestational surrogate in a recent post on her website. As many Kardashian fans surely know, Kim announced the arrival of her third child (though first via surrogate) on Tuesday, January 16th. She confirmed the baby was a girl weighing 7 lbs., 6 oz., born January 15th at 12:47 a.m. PST.
The post on her app, entitled, “The Truth About My Pregnancy Decision: What it was like not carrying my child,” begins with Kim writing, “I have always been really honest about my struggles with pregnancy.” She then goes on to note that many may think using a surrogate is taking the “easy way out.” However, she asserts this was definitely not the case for her.
"Having a gestational carrier is definitely different, but anyone who says or thinks it's the easy way out is completely wrong. People assume it's better because you don't have to deal with the physical changes, pain or complications with delivery, but for me it was so hard to not carry my own child, especially after I carried North and Saint."
However, Kim also was clear about the fact that she’s extremely thankful for her surrogate and for the fact that modern medicine enabled her to expand her family.
“I’m so grateful for modern technology and that this is even possible,” she wrote. “It’s not for everyone, but I absolutely love my gestational carrier and this was the best experience I’ve ever had. Our gestational carrier gave us the greatest gift one could give.”
Again, Kim shouldn’t have to explain her personal decisions to anyone — especially when they relate to her body and her family. But as always, we appreciate her candor. Surrogacy is an issue that’s all-too-often shrouded in mystery and stigma, and we’re all for any and all efforts to normalize a process that affects so many women and families.
