We can’t stop watching Kevin Spacey’s epic Tony Awards intro
Being a first-time host of the Tony Awards would make just about anyone nervous, and even Hollywood veterans aren’t immune to the jitters from such a big task. But Kevin Spacey was more than ready to take on the job, and his epic opening number from the 2017 Tony Awards proved it.
Spacey opened the Tonys by poking fun at the night’s biggest nominees, while also enlisting past hosts Billy Crystal and Whoopi Goldberg for advice.
Spacey began with a hilarious parody of Dear Evan Hansen, making references to last year’s host James Corden, and Jimmy Kimmel’s “Mean Tweets.” https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5wPV4FAb664
He also parodied the other Tony-nominated best musicals Groundhog Day, Natasha Pierre and the Great Comet of 1812, and Come from Away.
Stephen Colbert and past Tonys host Whoopi Goldberg offered sage advice, while fellow former host Billy Crystal seemed a bit bitter that he was the 14th person offered the job, quipping, “if all else fails, put on a dress.”
And put on a dress he did, dressing as Norma Desmond from Sunset Boulevard to sing “As If We Never Said Goodbye.”

Spacey also hilariously made fun of the never-ending speculation about his sexuality, declaring, “I’m coming out — wait, no no no no…”
It was a fun beginning to a triumphant show honoring the best of Broadway for the year, and Spacey proved he can sing and tap dance with the best, going toe-to-toe with New York City legends The Rockettes, and we loved every second of the nearly 12 minute opening number. Bravo!
