Kesha wrote a powerful essay about overcoming her eating disorder
Kesha’s had a rough past few years, but the fact that she’s conquered so much has made her incredibly inspirational. In a beautifully penned essay for Teen Vogue, Kesha detailed how she overcame her eating disorder, and also gave hopeful teens some incredible advice on how to find happiness.
The singer originally opened up about seeking treatment for her eating disorder in 2014.
"I felt like part of my job was to be as skinny as possible and, to make that happen, I had been abusing my body," she said in an interview with Elle UK.
She received treatment through rehab, and left feeling happier and healthier. And as someone who’s been through all of it in the public eye, she’s got some great advice on how to move forward.
"The amount of body-shaming and baseless slut-shaming online makes me sick. I know from personal experience how comments can mess up somebody’s self-confidence and sense of self-worth," she wrote. "I have felt so unlovable after reading cruel words written by strangers who don’t know a thing about me."
Kesha actually credits the catty comments for destroying her self-esteem. It just shows that negative words can truly affect anyone — and even though someone is a celebrity, it doesn’t mean that they’re fair game for ridicule.
But the simple act of taking care of herself made her rise above the criticism and stop the unhealthy cycles that her eating disorder created. “Once you take the step to help yourself, you’re going to be so happy you did,” she noted.
She actually suggests a brief break from social media, for others who are in the same situation. For Kesha, she felt empowered by taking hikes, riding her bike, and simply enjoying the great outdoors. Otherwise, “trying to change your life based on other people’s thoughts can drive you crazy.”
"With this essay, I want to pass along the message to anyone who struggles with an eating disorder, or depression, or anxiety, or anything else, that if you have physical or emotional scars, don’t be ashamed of them, because they are part of you," Kesha wrote. "Remember that beauty comes in all shapes and sizes. And that no one can take the magic you make."
Such beautiful words from a beautiful soul. We’re so proud of Kesha’s healthy journey forward.
