Kesha chokes up while performing “Til it Happens to You” for Humane Society

In spite of the adversity she’s faced, Kesha has been truly delivering when it comes to her live performances.

Last night, she sang a rendition of Lady Gaga’s “Til It Happens to You” at the Humane Society of the United States Los Angeles Gala. With lyrics like “Til it happens to you / You don’t know how I feel, how I feel, how I feel,” the song, written by artist Diane Warren, clearly stirred up some emotions for Kesha.

Before Diane, the evening’s honoree, began playing piano, Kesha’s eyes filled with tears and she had to take a few cleansing breaths. “I want to dedicate this song to every man, woman, child [and] animal that has ever been abused,” Kesha said before singing. In the background, images of farm animals caged in close quarters flashed on a projector. The crowd gave her a standing ovation, and fellow attendee Zendaya ran over to hug the singer, telling her, “That was so beautiful.”

The Humane Society Gala performance comes soon after she brought down the house during Zedd’s DJ set at Coachella a few weeks ago. It’s so inspiring to see Kesha finding her voice after her traumatic experience with producer and songwriter Dr. Luke, whom she says abused her repeatedly over the years.
