Kerry Washington just blew our minds by talking about her former dance teacher…J.Lo!

How does the song go again? “It’s a small world after all?”

Well, that’s exactly the case with Kerry Washington, who revealed in an interview on The Tonight Show with Jimmy Fallon on Friday that her former dance teacher was none other than…Jennifer Lopez!

According to the Scandal star, she and Lopez met while both growing up in the New York City neighborhood of The Bronx where they took dance classes at a studio run by Larry Maldonado at the local Boys and Girls Club. When the hugely influential Maldonado couldn’t make it to class, Lopez stepped in as a substitute. (You can watch the Latina star thank Maldonado for starting the program here.)

“He had an awesome substitute teacher named Jennifer who would sometimes step in and teach, but then she left to move to L.A. and be on In Living Color,” Washington told the Fallon audience matter-of-factly.

And we all know what happened next: Lopez turned her success as a Fly Girl on In Living Color into an acting career, which eventually led to her breakout role as Mexican-American pop star Selena in the 1997 film of the same name. Two years later, she released her debut album, On The 6, named after the 6 subway train that runs up to The Bronx, and the rest is multi-platinum, covered in gold and dipped in glitter history.

“So, that explains everything, that’s why I’m a really good dancer,” Kerry Washington humblebragged to Fallon after he made the connection. “Don’t be fooled by the rocks that I’ve got – I’m Kerry from the block.”

Washington appeared to promote the April 16 premiere her new HBO film, Confirmation, where she plays Anita Hill, an attorney and academic who accused U.S. Supreme Court nominee Clarence Thomas of sexual harassment. As far as we know, there’s no dancing in the film, but we wouldn’t miss it for the world. You’ve come a long way, Kerry! Check out her whole interview with Jimmy Fallon below.
