Kelly Ripa’s son got in trouble at school, and it involves Stephen Colbert and a stripper pole
Kids do the darndest things, right? This story is just proof that even if your mother is one of daytime television’s most familiar faces, you can’t get away with everything. During an appearance on The Late Show, Kelly Ripa talked to Stephen Colbert about how his children’s book got her son into a lot of hot water.
Hold up, you may be asking — Colbert has a children’s book?
Indeed! Back in 2012, Colbert wrote a book called I Am A Pole (And So Can You!).In his own words, it’s about “the adventures of a pole that doesn’t know what kind of pole it is.”
It’s not the book itself that Ripa is against. In fact, she’s quite supportive of it.
"I have to say, and I'm not selling books for you, but this happens to be the best children's book I've ever read," Ripa noted.
What she’s against is the fact that her son Joaquin, now a teenager, brought the book to school with him when he was just a nine-year-old.

Joaquin found the book, and figured it’d be a good idea to bring it to school with him. Being dyslexic, his school focused primarily on enhancing reading ability, and his teacher often allowed students to bring books from home for her to read out loud.
But, well, the book isn’t as innocent as it sounds. During the pole’s travels, it ventures into a strip club.
Ripa decided to highlight one big part of the book, which stated that the pole “interned as a stripper pole, but couldn’t stand the grind.”
"They have to learn somewhere, Kelly" Colbert joked.
Well, at least the pole was being honest.
This was surely an embarrassing moment, but the good news is that at the time, Joaquin didn’t truly figure out why.
In fact, it sounds like the teacher handled the situation perfectly — by writing Ripa a note to say the book was inappropriate, and stopping the book presentation right when trouble started brewing.
Still, in Ripa’s eyes, it serves as one of her very favorite school-related parenting memories. And, all in all, her sharing it with us makes us love her even more!
