Keke Palmer talks to us about her new book, and why you should go makeup-free whenever you want

Keke Palmer is a busy woman. After wrapping up Scream Queens’ second season and launching a new collab with ShoeDazzle, the 23-year-old actress, singer, style icon, and now, author, has released her first book, I Don’t Belong to You: Quiet the Noise and Find Your Voice. Known for always speaking out against bullying and motivating her fans to follow their dreams, it was only natural for Keke to collect her inspiring messages in a book.

We caught up with Keke at a recent event for her latest ShoeDazzle line to chat about the new book, keeping it real on Instagram, and of course, Scream Queens!

On her book, I Don’t Belong to You:

"I'm really excited about the book. A lot of people probably think it’s a memoir, but it’s not really — it’s more about how I came to accepting myself. If I can share anything, or be an example of anything, it would be that. I'm just so thankful to be in a place where I'm happy to be who I am, and I had to go through a lot to get there. It's about how I turned those situations, how I changed my mind and the mental constructs that held me back, to help me live a more free life. It's important to me, I feel that everybody deserves that."

As much as we enjoy getting glammed up, we really love how Keke DGAF if she doesn’t feel like wearing makeup. That doesn’t stop her from going on the ‘gram and showing off her gorgeous, fresh-faced self. It inspires us to do the same!

This is what Keke had to say about her choice to sometimes forgo a full face of makeup:

"It's too hard. Let's be real with ourselves. You're never going to wake up full face in makeup unless you want your skin to be fucked up. It's not about not wanting to be glamorous, but let's not get to the point where we love glamour so much that we start to hate what's natural. Sometimes I get ridiculed for not wearing makeup and I’m like, guys, lets not get mixed up. We have to first accept our real selves and be happy with our natural selves, and then we'll enjoy the other things that are going to happen. We just gotta keep it real with us."

If you followed our Scream Queens fashion recaps, you know we are crossing our fingers for a third season!

We had to ask Keke about her character Zayday’s style and how it compares to her own:

"The clothes were so fun because Zayday's fashion is so different from my own. She's more like Michelle Obama; she's giving you Solange vibes. That's what I love about Zayday. Back in the first season we did a little bit more Beyoncé, so she was doing crop tops and stuff like that, but now that she was a doctor in the office, we really wanted to make the style a little bit more conservative. That's why we steered more towards Michelle Obama, which is of course, totally different from Keke's style."
