Kehlani revealed the title of her new album and it’s definitely an homage

Kehlani made waves when her mixtape You Should Be Here dropped last year, and then again when the tape was up for Best Urban Contemporary Album at the Grammys this year. Though she’s been touring and steadily releasing music all year, including a track for the Suicide Squad soundtrack, she still *technically* hasn’t released her first album album. (The music industry is weird.)

Until now! Kehlani announced her debut’s album name on TwitterSWEETSEXYSAVAGE, a triptych of aspirations.

Now, if the phrasing of SWEETSEXYSAVAGE sounds familiar, you and I alike are onto something. After all, #just90skids hear that three-adjective structure and probably think of none other than TLC’s iconic CrazySexyCool album.

It is definitely not a stretch to believe that Kehlani, a rising R&B singer whose personal style is as much a part of her artist appeal as is her distinctly chill music, is a fan of TLC. In that case, the album’s title is both an homage and a promise: To fulfill the legacy of those still-iconic women and songs, while creating her own distinct sound and image.

Since tweeting out the album’s name, Kehlani’s engaged with fans who’ve both praised and critiqued her album name: false

Next on Kehlani’s docket? She recently released a killer collab with UK rapper Little Simz, and it seems the two are turning their one-off song into a video. Yes, please:
