Kate Middleton re-wore an old dress to Prince Harry and Meghan Markle’s royal wedding — but there’s a sweet reason behind it

The royal wedding day is finally here! After what feels like years of waiting (but really, it was only about six months), Prince Harry and Meghan Markle officially tied the knot in a beautiful ceremony at St George’s Chapel. The bride obviously stole the show in a Givenchy bridal gown designed by Clare Waight Keller. But we’re also swooning over Kate Middleton’s royal wedding look. And, more importantly, we’re also swooning over why she chose it.

Middleton always knocks it out of the park with her fashion choices, so we’re not surprised that she showed up looking like absolute perfection. (We mean, this is a woman who gave birth and stepped out for photos with nary a hair out of place.)  Markle’s new sister-in-law Middleton chose a pale yellow Alexander McQueen dress and Philip Treacy hat. But the interesting thing? Middleton has already worn that dress. And not once, but twice — she reportedly wore it to Princess Charlotte’s christening and to Queen Elizabeth II’s birthday party.

Now, you might be wondering, Why would Kate Middleton re-wear a dress? And to Harry and Meghan’s royal wedding, of all events? Well, we have a feeling it was so she wouldn’t upstage the bride. Middleton probably knew that everyone would be curious to see her outfit, so she kept it simple. The duchess, by the way, often recycles her looks, which we think is both environmental and elegant.

Honestly, we’re copying Middleton’s entire look for all the summer weddings we’re attending this season.

It’s perfectly understated and won’t upstage the bride, but gorgeous enough that we would want to Instagram the ish out of it.

Middleton and Prince William wed on April 29th, 2011 and were the talk of the town during their own royal ceremony that was watched around the world. For her nuptials, she wore a dress designed for her by Sarah Burton, the creative director at Alexander McQueen. Yep — Middleton definitely has a thing for McQueen.

We love Kate’s dress, but we love the sentiment behind her choice even more. She’s such a thoughtful sister-in-law already.
