Matthew McConaughey Agrees That He Was Kate Hudson’s Worst On-Screen Kiss
Spoiler: there may have been some snot involved.
Update, November 17th, 2020: After Kate Hudson threw Matthew McConaughey under the bus as being her worst on-screen kiss while talking with Gwyneth Paltrow on The Goop Podcast last month, McConaughey responded—and he agrees with her wholeheartedly.
Hudson had said that when she and McConaughey shared their kiss in Fool’s Gold, “He just had snot all over his face,” and kissing him just wasn’t a pleasant experience. And McConaughey confirmed to Yahoo Entertainment, yes, there was snot, and no, the kiss was not good.
So many of Kate and I’s kisses have been awkward, he told Yahoo Entertainment. I mean, we’re still like, hey, can we ever get a kiss where it’s just like the temperature’s right, nobody’s interrupting, the ocean’s not interrupting, nobody’s dropping stuff on us above our head?
He continued, “In Fool’s Gold, it’s like, okay, here’s the scene: you’re in the middle of the ocean, you go under the water…then you come up out of the water like you’re gasping for air, you’re glad to be alive, then you look at each other, swim to each other, and then go into an embrace.”
During that kiss specifically, McConaughey said, There was a lot of salt water, snot, and all kinds of stuff that are in between all those…you’re like, ‘okay, I think that worked, but did that look any good?’ And they’re like, ‘Nope. We better do another take.’
So although he agreed, “We never got have our nice “romantic” kiss,” he has hope. “There’s still time,” McConaughey said. And wow, would we love another Hudson-McConaughey rom-com where that nice romantic kiss happens.
Original Post, October 14th, 2020: For those of us who have Matthew McConaughey on our celebrity crush short list, Kate Hudson kind of just squashed the dream. While chatting with pal Gwyneth Paltrow on the October 13th episode of the The Goop Podcast, Hudson admitted that her handful of kisses with McConaughey in 2008’s Fool’s Gold were some of the worst on-screen kisses she’s ever had.
Paltrow initially wanted to know who provided Hudson with the best on-screen kiss, however, Hudson said, “I feel like I kind of haven’t had the best kissers. I feel like I should have had better ones.”
She then specifically threw Matthew McConaughey under the bus.
“The thing is, every time I kiss McConaughey, it’s like there’s just something happening and there’s like snot or wind,” Hudson told Paltrow before laughing. “Like when we were kissing in the end of Fool’s Gold, we’re like in the ocean, we like had the plane crash. He just had snot all over his face.”
Paltrow asked if McConaughey, who also starred alongside Hudson in 2003’s How to Lose a Guy in 10 Days, has “brother energy.” “Like with Robert [Downey Jr.], like when I kissed him and I was like, ‘You’ve got to be kidding me,'” Paltrow joked. “This is literally like kissing my brother.”
Hudson said no, although it can be a little sibling-y at times.
Before signing off, Hudson rounded back to the starter question and credited her Almost Famous costar Billy Crudup for having the most skill when it came to kissing. “Billy was good. That was good,” Hudson said, adding “but you didn’t see it, cause they cut it out.”
Poor, Matthew and his snot-covered face. He’s still on our short list, though we’ll be sure to keep tissues on our person at all times…just in case.
