The Kardashian/Jenner sisters are insecure about their bodies just like us, obviously

Last week, Kylie Jenner told the truth about her lips, finally putting all the rumors and speculation to rest. “I have temporary lip fillers, it’s just an insecurity of mine and it’s what I wanted to do,” Kylie said in a Keeping up with the Kardashians preview. All of us have insecurities about our bodies, but not all of us are in the constant spotlight. With that in mind, we feel totally empathetic. Can you imagine being followed by cameras for half your life? Particularly at the age of 17?

In the most recent episode of Keeping up with the Kardashians, the Kardashian/Jenner sisters continue to talk about body image — and it’s actually really refreshing. Their conversation serves as a perfect reminder: ALL of us deal with self-doubt. And being rich and famous doesn’t make you impervious to that.

In the episode, not only does Kylie Jenner reveal how hard it is to stay confident with her body, but she explains why. “We have all eyes on us all the time. So, especially for me at my age trying to find myself, it’s hard to not let it affect you,” she says. Even her older sisters face that same battle with their body image. “I’m so insecure lately . . . Just with my weight. I can’t leave the house without my Spanx,” Kim confesses to Kylie and Kendall (and to the camera).

But these beauty standards are also a part of a vicious cycle, a cycle that the Kardashians are involved with and perpetuate. The family is known for answering to ridiculous beauty standards with extreme measures — and this obviously doesn’t serve as an amazing example for men and women who watch the show and aspire to the Kardashians’ looks. In the same episode after Khloe says, “When you’re photographed all the time, it’s natural to have insecurities or want to change things about yourself.” The cameras follow her to a butt-lasering appointment.

The girls have also admitted to hair-lengthening supplements, waist-slimming, face-boosting, and starving themselves before photoshoots (Kourtney passed out during a a post-baby diet in anticipation of a shoot. She admitted she was embarrassed about punishing her body so badly just for a magazine spread).

So, yes the Kardashians/Jenners are undoubtedly part of the problem, but they’re also an extreme example of the impossible beauty standards we’re pressured to follow — all of us. Of course everyone should do whatever it is that makes them feel their best, but we should also collectively be shunning beauty standards that are harmful, too extreme, and even make us sick. On a super positive note, it’s touching to see the sisters have each other’s backs. “I think you look amazing. Like I’m loving this short hair. Will you bank a couple selfies?” Kim tells Kylie in the episode.

“Having older sisters with some of the same insecurities as me helps me a lot and makes me feel like it’s ok,” Kylie tells the camera. It’s a great thing the sisters have each other, but then again, what would happen if these sisters just turned their backs a bit on the beauty standards expected of them, and looked like their natural selves? Extreme standards exist and will continue to exist unless women say, “no way.” It’s something to think about.
