Justin Timberlake revealed why he left ‘NSync, and we get it

If you were a child of the ’90s and early aughts, then ‘NSync likely holds a very special place in your heart (unless you were a BSB aficionado, but you get what we mean). So it was pretty enlightening to hear Justin Timberlake explain why he left the group — especially now that he’s had 15 years of perspective.

If you’ll put on your nostalgia hats, you’ll remember that the band went on an official “hiatus” in 2002, and Justin released his first solo album, Justified, later that year (and that “hiatus” soon became permanent).

While we might have been seriously heartbroken at the time, it now all makes a lot of sense. In an interview with The Hollywood Reporter, Timberlake said,

“I was growing out of it. I felt like I cared more about the music than some of the other people in the group. And I felt like I had other music I wanted to make and that I needed to follow my heart.

He also went on to say, “We were on a stadium tour, and I just felt like the whole thing was too big. It started out as a fun snowball fight that was becoming an avalanche.”

As much as our boy band-obsessed little hearts will always be hoping for an ‘NSync reunion, we utterly and totally get what Justin is saying. Especially when we look back on all that he’s accomplished as a solo artist over the past decade and a half.

This musically-inclined baby bird seriously had to stretch his wings…and we’re genuinely so glad he ultimately took a leap of faith and pursued his dreams (because we don’t even want to imagine a world without Sexy Back, tbh)

So here’s to following your heart and doing what’s right for you — even if it seems like the world’s against it. Also, this:

For old times’ sake.
