“Justice League” completely cut an important character, and I’m going to need to see its deleted scenes ASAP
Friends, I don’t want to cause any sort of alarm, but it appears that Robin Wright is missing from Justice League.
“Well, obviously,” you say, because you, too, have also seen Justice League and this means you’re okay with reading about some spoilers from here on out. “She died during Wonder Woman, and it was horribly sad, and I’m still not over it. She wasn’t supposed to be in Justice League, come on, this is like 100 years after that epic beach battle that opened Wonder Woman.“
And listen, I hear you. I hear this. However, Robin Wright was supposed to be in Justice League, and I need answers about this right now.
Wright, as you remember, played Antiope in Wonder Woman, Diana’s aunt and warrior trainer. Wright herself is a national treasure, and Wright playing the most badass warrior in all of Themyscira was everything we hoped for. It was ridiculously upsetting when she died at the beginning of the movie, but her guidance and spirit definitely lives on in Diana.
Initially, it was assumed that Antiope’s part in the DC Extended Universe was done…and then, Connie Nielsen (who plays Hippolyta) revealed to The Los Angeles Times that she and Wright would be back in character for Justice League.
Here’s the exact quote:
Los Angeles Times: The film only briefly touches on the relationship between Queen Hippolyta and Diana. Are we going to see more of that in the future?
Gal Gadot: Of course; the mother and daughter relationship is always a beautiful but complex relationship. I think that there’s a lot more to explore.
Connie Nielsen: And [Wright and I] got to do more in Justice League as well. As sisters as well. Kind of badass as well. We can’t say much, but …
Robin Wright: And more of the story, you get some of the history.
Nielsen, without a doubt, confirmed that she would be back (and we saw her in the movie, though very briefly), and also confirmed that Wright would be back. Wright suggested we would get more of a backstory for these two amazonian sisters.
Cool! So where was that in Justice League?
I’ve polled some of my friends who saw early screenings of the film, because at first I was like, “Maybe I literally just missed her…?” But so far, no one can 100% confirm that Wright is in the movie. Maybe I did completely miss her, because I was too busy laughing at Barry Allen. But…probably not. I’m leaning more toward she wasn’t even there. Yes, she might have been in one of the chaotic battle flashbacks, but Nielsen and Wright seemed to imply that we would get character development with the two of them as sisters.
This past summer, Justice League went through some extensive reshoots, after director Zach Snyder left the project for personal reasons, and Joss Whedon stepped in to finish everything up. The cast reassembled, and Henry Cavill’s mustache had to be digitally removed (really). It appears that during the reshoots and rework of the script, Wright’s role in the film was completely dropped; the LA Times story ran on June 2nd, the reshoots weren’t made public until the end of July.
It’s a shame that while reworking things, someone like Wright’s Antiope was left on the cutting room floor. There’s always hope she could return in another Wonder Woman movie, or in one of the 600 other DCEU movies currently slated to come out. I just wanted her now.
