Juliette Lewis forms a metal supergroup, and now we’re obsessed
Juliette Lewis has always played a badass in movies, from Whip It and Cape Fear to National Lampoon’s Christmas Vacation. But she’s also a kickass rock singer IRL.
Here’s a brief history: Juliette was part of a band called Juliette and the Licks. Started in 2003, the band was formed when Juliette gathered together Patty Schemel on drums, Todd Morse on guitar, and Paul III on bass. And we gotta tell ya, Juliette has a natural talent for rock and roll. She’s got a super sweet stage presence and a great voice, and we’re in love with her raw sound.
Unfortunately, Juliette and the Licks broke up back in 2009, but she then started rocking out on her own, solo.
Now, though, she’s back in a band … a metal band called “Giraffe Tongue Orchestra.” Pretty crazy name, right? Maybe it’s time to highlight how totally crazy this supergroup is (in the best way).
Listen to this: it’s made up of The Dillinger Escape Plan‘s Ben Weinman, Mastodon‘s Brent Hinds, Dethklok‘s Pete Griffin, former Mars Volta drummer Thomas Pridgen, and our beloved Juliette as lead vocals. Kinda random, but totally kickass, and we’re thrilled to see Juliette belt it out again.
Weinman reached out to her after he saw her being her badass self at a Juliette and the Licks concert. Weinman told The PRP how it went down:
“…Me and [Juliette] have become pretty close friends and she’s amazing, obviously I’m a huge fan of her work as an actress and many years ago I saw her band Juliette and the Licks play and like most people I was pretty skeptical. I’m like, ‘Oh another actress or actor that has a band, like vanity project blah, blah, blah.”’So I went into the show and I basically saw somebody that gave 110%. By the end of the show she was drenched in sweat, she was throwing herself into the crowd, and when I thought about it I saw this person putting all her energy and spirit into this music, I thought this was almost more real than most bands because she doesn’t need this.”
We totally love Weinman’s take on Juliette as he goes further to explain, “She doesn’t need to be playing in front of 500 people on this shitty ugly club, you know? She’s a successful actress–she did a 9-minute-long acting scene with Robert DeNiro for god sakes. And here she is by choice in a grungy club with a dirty toilet just putting everything into it.”
Juliette, we agree with Weinman, and as soon as Giraffe Tongue Orchestra comes out with an album, you bet we’ll buy it. Rock on!
