Julia Roberts recalls the first time she was recognized by a fan. Um, it got super awkward.

Being a superstar isn’t all glam parties and signing autographs on the red carpet — sometimes, it’s being recognized in a public restroom. At least, that’s what happened to Julia Roberts when she was recognized for the first time ever, way back in the ’80s. Roberts told this story last night on Jimmy Kimmel, and it’s a gentle (and hilarious) reminder that being famous can get pretty weird.

Long before Julia Roberts was Oscar-winning film legend Julie Roberts, she was that girl from Mystic Pizza. (If you’ve never seen the awesome 1988 movie about three teenage co-workers at a Connecticut pizza shop, you need to get on that.) Obviously, Roberts made an impression on viewers, and one in particular—a fan who had NO shame.

We’re not going to spoil the story for you, because it’s way better when Julia tells it. So without further ado, here’s what happened the first time Julia Roberts was recognized.
