Stars like Josh Hutcherson are putting their fame to great use in this PSA about consent
A bunch of our favorite stars just teamed up with the White House to put together a hugely important public service announcement about consent. “It’s On Us” is a campaign working to get the word out that “Sex without consent is sexual assault.” In addition to making it clear what consent is and that sex can only occur after consent has been given, “It’s On Us” also puts the responsibility on us as a community to “intervene in situations where consent has not or cannot be given” and “to create an environment in which sexual assault is unacceptable and survivors are supported.”
As Seventeen reports, last year, celebrities like Jon Hamm, Kerry Washington, Questlove, Joel McHale, Rose Byrne, Connie Britton, plus Barack Obama and Joe Biden, teamed up to present a 30-second PSA that tells us that “It’s on us to stop sexual assault, to get in the way before it happens, to get a friend home safe, to not blame the victim, to look out for each other, to not look the other way… to step in, to take responsibility… it’s on us, all of us, to stop sexual assault.”
In this new PSA, stars like Zoe Saldana, Matt McGorry, Minka Kelly, Jessica Szhor, Josh Hutcherson, Nina Dobrev, John Cho,Jesse Metcalfe, and Haim have joined forces to tell the world that consent MUST come before sex.
“There’s one thing you can never have sex without,” the stars tell us. “It’s not something you buy, or something you take. There’s only one way to get it. It has to be given to you, freely. Because sex without it isn’t sex. It’s rape. Consent. If you don’t get it, you don’t get it. It’s on us to stop sexual assault.”
This PSA is just as short and powerful as its predecessor and it packs just as much of a punch. Watch the video below, and, to learn more about “It’s On Us,” visit the website here.
