JGL lip-syncs Usher’s ‘Yeah,’ makes our early ’00s dreams come true
Usher’s “Yeah” is the perfect example of everything that made music in the early ’00s so great. It was the ultimate middle school dance anthem: It didn’t make a ton of sense, but it was ridiculously catchy — and it allowed everyone to feel just a little bit more in tune to all the sexy adult things that were still out of reach. Even in high school, “Yeah” remained a beloved favorite that could always get the whole crowd going. To this day, every time I hear it on the radio, I get flashbacks to 13-year-olds wearing glow stick necklaces and plastic, neon fedoras while trying to do the worm.
“Yeah” will probably always trigger some major nostalgia for anyone who came of age in the early ’00s — but when another one of our teen crushes sings it? Let’s just say it really takes things to the next level. In the latest sneak preview of the upcoming season of Spike’s Lip Sync Battle, Joseph Gordon-Levitt breaks it down to Ludacris’ verse in “Yeah” — and it’s everything we could hope for and more.
From the start, it’s obvious that JGL is just as passionate about the song as we are. He doesn’t skip a single word, and his dance moves are on point. Of course, it’s not the first time we’ve seen JGL slay at lip-syncing — we’ll never forget his rendition of Nicki Minaj’s “Superbass” on The Tonight Show with Jimmy Fallon — but we think this is an excellent new addition to his repertoire.
In the clip, JGL is allegedly battling it out with his The Night Before co-star, Anthony Mackie (check out his video singing Katy Perry’s “I Kissed a Girl” right here), in a special holiday episode of the show that airs November 19. We’re not here to pick sides, but let’s just say JGL definitely brings his best. Our middle school selves are swooning. (Shout-out to ’90s JGL in 10 Things I Hate About You.)
