Jon Stewart’s sobering reaction to the Charleston church shooting

For years, The Daily Show has been our go-to for both reality checks and much-needed humor in the wake of frustration, anger, and even tragedy. Last night, Jon Stewart went the reality route and put humor on the shelf while discussing the horrible racially-motivated shooting at a historic African-American Charleston church. The shooting Wednesday night left nine dead, and a nation heartbroken.

Stewart used his monologue to take on the tragedy of the situation and what he perceives to be the hypocrisy of doing everything we possibly can to protect Americans from terrorist attacks that come from those abroad, while simultaneously doing next-to-noting to protect Americans from terrorist attacks hatched up here at home.

“We’ve invaded two countries, and spent trillions of dollars, and thousands of American lives. And now fly unmanned death machines over like five or six different countries, all to keep America safe. (…) Nine people, shot in the church — what about that?” Stewart said.

He also alluded to the American paralysis when it comes to making meaningful reforms to gun laws, “I honestly have nothing, other than just sadness that we have to peer once again into the abyss of the depraved violence that we do to each other, and the nexus of a gaping racial wound that will just not heal but we pretend doesn’t exist . . . We still won’t do jacks**t.”

Those quotes just scratch the surface of Stewart’s incredibly meaningful monologue. His comments are poignant and angry, and they eloquently highlight the overwhelming frustration and hurt so many of us are feeling.
