Jon Stewart is back with a new TV gig, and we’re breathing a sigh of relief
Just when we thought we had said goodbye Jon Stewart for good when he left the Daily Show back in August, he comes out of nowhere and signs a deal with HBO. This isn’t just any deal, either. It’s a four-year, multiplatform deal that also gives HBO an exclusive first-look option for anything else the comedian may be producing.
Specifically, Stewart will be working with HBO Go and HBO Now, two of HBO’s online services. He’ll be creating “short-form digital content” on current events, first alongside production company OTOY Inc.
Michael Lombardo, president of HBO Programming, made the formal announcement. “Jon Stewart led a revolution that changed the face of TV comedy on the Daily Show,” Lombardo explained. “He graced our network nearly 20 years ago, so we’re thrilled to welcome back his immense talents in this next chapter of his career.”
Stewart is equally as excited, joking that “Appearing on television 22 minutes a night clearly broke me. I’m pretty sure I can produce a few minutes of content every now and again.”
Personally, we’re hoping it’s now and again and again and again, since there’s been a Jon Stewart-shaped hole in our hearts since he left the iconic Comedy Central series. It’s unclear when we can expect the first installment of this new partnership, but we do know that the number of HBO subscribers probably just shot way up.
