Jon Stewart’s next project? Opening an animal sanctuary
With The Daily Show safely in new hands, many have wondered what Jon Stewart will be doing now. Over the weekend, Stewart shared his plans, and we’re super into it. He and his wife, Tracey, are opening an animal sanctuary.
At a gala for Farm Sanctuary, a nonprofit fighting for animal rights, he announced that they had bought a 12-acre farm in New Jersey back in 2013. Now, they plan on turning the land into a sanctuary for rescued factory farm animals.
Factory farms have come under fire for years due to inhumane treatment of animals, including overcrowding and disfiguration. Public outrage at both the treatment of animals and public health concerns linked to factory farms has led to a resurgence in traditional animal husbandry practices, although factory farms still dominate the industry. For the animals who are rescued from factory farms, sanctuaries like the one Stewart will be operating, offer a chance for them to live out their lives in a humane setting.
This isn’t the first time the Stewarts have been involved with animal welfare. Tracey has been an advocate for animal rights for years, and her first book, Do Unto Animals: A Friendly Guide to How Animals Live, and How We Can Make Their Lives Better, came out this month.
“The joy of interacting with animals as friends instead of for human consumption is life-changing,” she stated in a Farm Sanctuary press release.
On an episode of The Daily Show earlier this year, Jon summed up the sentiment this way: “It’s harder to eat meat when you know the animal’s name.”
Even those who aren’t vegetarian can applaud the Stewarts’ decision to take a leading role in helping animals live better, healthier lives. Way to go, Jon and Tracey!
