More proof that Jon Hamm totally gets us
GQ has blessed us with an amazing profile on Jon Hamm, noted fantastic actor and human-eclipse-of-humor-and-handsomeness. With Mad Men coming to an end (the final seven-episode run starts on April 5!), we’re thrilled with the look-back at Hamm’s career-changing turn as ad-man Don Draper. But what we really love is the fact that Jon Hamm sounds awesomely relatable.
Here are some of our favorite moments from the interview that prove the actor, who can equally kill it on Mad Men, Bridesmaids andThe Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt, is totally our kind of guy:
He geeks out, big-time: Want to know what Hamm is really like? Just ask his longtime partner Jennifer Westfeldt, who tells GQ, he’s “a goofball and a science nerd and a voracious reader and a fanatical Cardinals fan and a comedy geek.”
Goofiness is his mantra: “Being goofy, being funny, f****** around—that’s part of what makes life worth going through,” he says. Um, yes, Jon Hamm, we couldn’t agree more. Please make more cameos on SNL to make our lives happier.
He gets our emotional conflict with Don Draper: “I’m the guy who lives with the guy every day, and I’m like, ‘No, no, no, no, no [when people try to excuse Don].’ But I also get the thing in popular culture, American culture, where you see a broken thing and go, ‘I want to fix that. I want to shape that. I want to cure that.’”
He compares the awkward sadness of ending a show to graduating high school: He also said the final season feels “like senior year of high school. ‘We’ll stay in touch! I’ll text you! We’ll see each other all the time!’ And it’s like, ‘Will we really?‘” God, we hope so.
Speaking of high school: “I was just kind of that weird kid that always hung around,” Hamm says of his early days. We don’t totally believe that’s true, but we feel you, Jon.
Even Jon Hamm has anxiety about the future: “Look, the one constant thing I’ve had in my career is now removed,” he tells GQ. “And that’s an eye-opener: Are people still going to take me seriously? Am I just going to do romantic comedies for the rest of my life? What’s next? And I don’t know, you know? I wish I was smug enough to have had a grand plan. I guess some people would say, ‘Okay, the last three years of Mad Men is going to be like this: I want to do a play. I want to do this. I want to do that.’ I was just like, ‘I want to do something that seems cool.’ ”
You can read the rest of the profile here. In the meantime, here’s what we can take away from this interview: Jon Hamm is an awesome geek, who sometimes feels awkward, loves being goofy and doesn’t have a master plan. Hello, we can relate.
