Johnny Weir totally won the Kentucky Derby hat game
I mean, yes, of course we care which horse wins the Kentucky Derby (congratulations this year to American Pharaoh) but what gets us REALLY excited is who wins the (unofficial) Kentucky Derby hat game, and this year, that honor most certainly goes to figure skater Johnny Weir whose hat had A MINT JULEP in it. Gaze in wonder below.
The mint julep is the traditional beverage of choice at the Kentucky Derby, and Weir TURNED IT INTO A HAT. Here’s his entire outfit, we’d be talking more about how amaze his suit is if we weren’t too preoccupied being obsessed with his hat.
Johnny always brings his A-game to the Kentucky Derby, this was his amaze Pegasus hat from last year:
Both hats were designed by milliner extraordinaire Kerin Rose Gold. When asked how she came up with this year’s glorious madness, Gold told Yahoo Beauty:
“Johnny had mentioned that the winner of Derby gets this giant blanket of red roses. I basically recreated that blanket. Then we wanted to spice it up more. He brought up the mint julep and I was like, ‘Why don’t we just put the mint julep on the hat?’ He named the hat ‘To the victor, the spoils,’ and the hat is literally the spoils of winning—it’s a giant wreath and an actual breakable tumbler glass on this hat. I painted the inside of the glass so the ‘liquid’ is on an angle and filled the glass with fake ice cubes that I drained the re-freezable liquid out of.”
Now we ALL want mint julep hats! Obsessed, obsessed.
