Johnny Depp is proud of Lily Rose’s openness about her sexuality, is the best dad

Johnny Depp has already proven himself to be a super great dad. Though he’s so proud of 16-year-old Lily-Rose for all of her amazing success (she recently became the new face of Chanel, after all!), he’s spoken up in the past about being a little concerned about how fast it’s all moving for her. But he’s inspired by the fact that she can do anything she sets her mind to, and that’s exactly why when he spoke to Daily Mail yesterday, we were not surprised to hear that he’s also proud of his daughter’s honesty about her sexuality.

Lily-Rose recently came out at the end of the summer as sexually fluid, meaning she does not identify as 100% heterosexual. But Johnny already knew. “She’s got thousands of followers on social media, and they were all taken completely by surprise,” the 52-year-old dad told Daily Mail. “But not me. I already knew because she tells me everything – she’s not afraid to say anything to me. We’re super-tight and I’m very proud of our relationship.”

Lily-Rose is a major LGBTQ+ advocate, joining the Self Evident Project, which, according to its mission statement, aims to “spread awareness and understanding about a broader spectrum of human sexuality,” and embraces individuals who place themselves anywhere on the spectrum.

Johnny knows his daughter is brilliant, but he’s also ready to be there for her if she ever needs anything, he told Daily Mail. “Lily’s really together – she’s a sharp kid and one of the smartest human beings I have ever met,” he said. “Whatever she is doing, if she needs any advice, I’m there for her. Kids are going to make their own decisions, but I guess that the only thing you can do as a parent is to offer support. And I do.”

He still can’t help but feel a little bit of that classic dad worry and nostalgia, watching his daughter grow up into such a fabulous, strong role model. “It’s such a funny thing when you see your daughter transitioning from your baby, your little girl, to suddenly being a young woman,” he told Daily Mail. “If you’re not really looking for it, you can miss it, and Lily-Rose is on that road already and there’s nothing I can do to stop it.”

He also spoke about his daughter’s recent signing with Chanel, explaining that it’s bizarre to see her decked out in so much high-fashion at such a young age. “She’s been snatched up by Karl Lagerfeld – which is a coincidence, as he spotted her mother when she was the same age, too – and when I see her with makeup and all that stuff, it’s really disturbing, because she’s a very beautiful girl, and it’s all happening so fast,” he admitted.

Johnny didn’t envision her being an actress, he explained, but he is totally supportive because “that’s what she enjoys doing, and it’s her passion and it’s where she ended up…”

He’ll always be there, but he doesn’t expect that worry to go away anytime soon, he explained to Daily Mail:

Oh, Johnny, you’re the best dad ever. But we have a feeling Lily-Rose is gonna kick ass, just like she’s already done during her 16 years — especially with such supportive parents watching her back.
