Johnny Cash’s gorg love letter to June gives our hearts a true-love jumpstart

Are you ready to feel some feels in the name of St. Valentine? Of course you are. No matter how cynical you are about St. Valentine’s Day, or how much you think it’s just a marketing ploy to make our hearts and wallets feel badly, this resurfaced letter from country music legend Johnny Cash to wife and love of his life, June Carter, will make your heart melt into an embarrassing puddle of emotion. According to Uproxx, Beagle Street (a British life insurance company) implemented a poll to find out who people thought wrote the most romantic love letter in the history of love letters. The list included icons like Keats, Hemingway, and Jimi Hendrix, but it turns out no one penned a greater love letter than Johnny Cash.

The poll’s winning letter was written from Johnny to June in 1994 on her 65th birthday, and it’s the most sweet, tender, genuine proof of their everlasting love. It’s the kind of love that feels so elusive, but which they made so beautifully real.

Take a gander at the most wonderfully romantic thing you’ll read all day (maybe all year?):

Translation if you need it:

Happy Birthday Princess. We get old and get used to each other. We think alike. We read each other’s minds. We know what the other wants without asking. Sometime we irritate each other a bit. Maybe sometimes take each other for granted.

But once in a while, like today, I meditate on it and realize how lucky I am to share my life with the greatest woman I ever met. You still fascinate me and inspire me. You influence me for the better. You’re the object of my desire, the #1 Earthly reason for my existence. I love you very much.

Happy Birthday Princess.
John

Here’s my favorite part. Bear with my emotions, OK?

“But once in awhile, like today, I meditate on it and realize how lucky I am to share my life with the greatest woman I ever met. You still fascinate and inspire me. You influence me for the better. You’re the object of my desire, the #1 earthly reason for my existence. I love you very much. Happy Birthday Princess.”

Full swoon. Johnny sure knew how to pen a love letter.

While admittedly Johnny wasn’t the greatest partner to his first wife (during his blossoming rock ‘n’ roll career he had numerous affairs and a substance abuse problem), it’s obvious that June Carter, his second wife, made him a better person. She was TOTALLY his soul-mate. When June died in 2003, Johnny passed away just four months later. So basically like The Notebook, but in real life. *SOB*

So if you’re planning on writing your boo, your BFF, or even your cat a love letter today, feel free to use Johnny’s words as inspiration. And maybe don’t officially settle on a life partner until you can imagine feeling about them (at 65) the way Johnny felt about June.
