John Legend Got Honest About What He Thinks of Chrissy Teigen’s Parenting
The singer opened up about what 24/7 mom-dad duty has looked like in quarantine.
Throughout their seven years of marriage, John Legend and Chrissy Teigen have been open books when it comes to discussing their relationship. No topics are off the table for the couple; sex, pregnancy, romance—you name it, these two will probably talk about it. And that includes parenting. Lately, Legend and Teigen have been spending more time than ever together at home with their kids Luna, 4, and 2-year-old Miles, who is literally Legend’s mini-me. And recently, Legend revealed his thoughts on how Teigen (who’s pregnant with their third child) has been handling 24/7 mom duty.
In a September Zoom interview for :BLACKPRINT #NoFilter, an Instagram live series launched by Meredith Corporation’s Black Employee Resource Group, Legend told People‘s Janine Rubenstein how impressed he’s been by Teigen’s parenting skills during quarantine.
“She’s been an extremely creative mom during this time,” Legend said, lighting up onscreen when speaking about his wife. “Every day, she’s trying to figure out a new craft or a new activity with the kids. One of the things she wanted to be when she was younger was a preschool teacher, and I’m definitely seeing that aspect of her. It’s hard, especially with toddlers, because there’s no such thing as independent study.”
“Obviously, it’s been a true test of mothering ability during this time, and she’s passing with flying colors,” Legend added.
Legend and Teigen, who live in California, are beginning to homeschool Luna in a “pod” with a few other kids from her preschool. The concept isn’t foreign to the singer, who was homeschooled by his mom up until second grade and again from fourth through sixth grade before attending public middle and high school (which he entered at the age of 11, NBD). Legend’s mom taught him and his three siblings while also tutoring her friends’ kids after the school day. “I have even more appreciation for what my mother did when we were kids, seeing what we’re doing now,” he explained in the interview.
Legend revealed that Luna and Miles want to be near him and Teigen “every single second of the day”, which is possible while the parents have been isolated at home. The dad even joked that his daughter might make an appearance on the video call: “She loves finding out when I’m doing a Zoom and crashing them, so we’ll see,” he said, laughing.
“The kids are still at an age where they prefer to be with us 24/7,” he explained. “A couple of days ago, Luna said to me, ‘Daddy, I’m never going to leave your side. I’m always going to be with you, and I’m just going to follow you around.’ And I’m like, ‘I’m going to write this down, because someday you’re going to feel very differently.'”
As for the family of four’s (soon to be five!) quarantine hobbies, anyone who follows Teigen on social media knows that she has been baking up a storm. When given the choice between his cookbook author wife’s peach, apple, and raspberry pie or her banana bread, Legend struggled to rank the desserts. “Ooh, I’m going to say the banana bread, by a hair—but it’s like, this close,” he said, making a tiny space between his pointer finger and thumb.
Another favorite Legend-Teigen household pastime during isolation? Dancing.
“We have little family dance parties at the house, and the kids are usually in charge of the music,” Legend revealed. “When I started playing them some songs from the new album, “I Do” was the one they just love, love, loved. They love dancing to it.”
The 11-time Grammy winner released his seventh studio album Bigger Love in June, and in August, he dropped the music video for his single “Wild”. Of course, this wasn’t just any old music video—Legend and Teigen used it as a creative way to announce her third pregnancy.
“It was Chrissy’s idea,” Legend said of the video reveal. “She was kind of hedging her bets, because we were early in our pregnancy, but she said, ‘Let’s just shoot it, and by the time the video is edited, we can decide whether or not to use that scene’.”
When the couple returned from Mexico where “Wild” was shot, all of Teigen’s tests “came back great and everything was healthy and good”, Legend says, so they decided to drop the bombshell in the video, totally shocking fans. The couple have been open about their fertility struggles—both Luna and Miles were the result of IVF—so Teigen’s natural pregnancy came as a surprise to them, too.
“We just didn’t think we could have a baby the old-fashioned way, honestly,” Legend explained. “We weren’t actively trying, other than the actual act of doing what one does to procreate. I joked about believing that there would be a quarantine baby boom with all these couples spending more time together, but I figured it wouldn’t happen to us because we’ve had fertility struggles—but here we are.”
The director of “Wild”, Nabil Elderkin, is no stranger to capturing special moments for Legend and Teigen. In fact, he cast the model as her future husband’s love interest in his music video for “Stereo” back in 2006, which is how the pair originally met—”And the rest is history,” Legend noted. Since then, Elderkin directed the singer’s music videos for “All of Me” (which was shot in the couple’s 2013 wedding location, Lake Como) and “Love Me Now” (which documented the time right after Teigen gave birth to Luna).
“It’s another milestone that [Elderkin] was a part of, so it’s a pretty cool, full circle moment,” Legend said of the music video.
After riding high on his album release and Teigen’s pregnancy reveal, Legend is continuing to balance family and work life during quarantine. “Chrissy’s in the midst of pregnancy, so I’m just trying to take care of her as much as possible, be a good daddy, and work a little bit here and there,” he said.
