Jon Hamm and Jennifer Westfeldt’s breakup ends the summer where love ended everywhere

Just when we thought we were out of the woods re: celebrity couple summer breakups, one last breakup snuck under the wire on Labor Day, and this one REALLY broke our hearts.

To recap, just in case you were too busy living life this summer to keep up on your celeb news, summer of 2015 was officially the Summer of Heartbreak and Sorrow when it came to the love lives of the rich and famous. In June we found out that Emma Roberts and Evan Peters ended their engagement, after dating since 2012, and being engaged since the holidays. In early July we learned that Jennifer Garner and Ben Affleck were getting a divorce after 10 years of marriage. Around the same time we were informed that Kourtney Kardashian and Scott Disick were calling it final quits after being together since 2006. Then, at the end of July, we learned that Blake Shelton and Miranda Lambert were getting a divorce (the two had been together since 2006, and married since 2011). At the beginning of August we found out that Gwen Stefani and Gavin Rossdale were splitting up after 13 years of marriage.

Then the rest of August and the beginning of September was pretty quiet. There was the sadness of hearing that Avril Lavigne and Chad Kroeger were separating after 2 years of marriage, but we really thought we were going to get through summer without too much more heartbreak.

Alas, it was not to be. Yesterday, actor Jon Hamm and his partner of almost 20 years, actress and writer Jennifer Westfeldt, released a statement to People announcing their split.

“With great sadness, we have decided to separate, after 18 years of love and shared history,” Hamm and Westfeldt said. “We will continue to be supportive of each other in every way possible moving forward.”

We of course love Hamm for his iconic Don Draper and all the amazing films and TV shows he’s lent his talents to (Bridesmaids, 30 Rock, Black Mirror, Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt, Wet Hot American Summer: First Day Of Camp, the list goes on and on). Meanwhile, we very much love Westfeldt for writing/starring in the indie rom-com classic Kissing Jessica Stein, as well as writing/starring in Ira and Abby (with our forever-love Chris Messina), and auteuring Friends With Kids with ALL our comedy loves (Adam Scott, Maya Rudolph, Chris O’Dowd, Kristen Wiig, Jon Hamm, basically about as much awesomeness as a movie can handle before it explodes.)

Westfeldt and Hamm’s relationship lasted an ETERNITY in Hollywood time and we really thought these two were going to be together forever. We’re so sad to hear that things didn’t work out between the two, which of course, compounds our collective sadness re: Breakup Summer.

Well, fall is officially here, let’s hope we can all enjoy our Pumpkin Spice Lattes without hearing about another celeb couple calling it quits for a good long time to come.
