John Green gives a fan amazing, heartfelt advice on Tumblr

Magical feelings wizard and award-winning author John Green always keeps it real on his Tumblr, fishingboatproceeds. Sure, he’s about to have another blockbuster with the film adaption of his novel Paper Towns, but he’s still down-to-earth enough to be your Tumblr dad. And for one anonymous fan, Green flexed his writing talents in a compassionate, thoughtful, and kind response to a heartbreaking story.

It’s unfortunately one we’ve heard before: That of a young person living in a toxic familial environment. Unable to bear their parents’ racism, homophobia, and ableism (despite the fact that anon has cerebral palsy), the 22-year-old anon turned to Green for some advice as to how to live in the face of such constant and close prejudice:

Green’s response is perfect:

Give us a second; there seems to be something in our eyes.

Green has written elegantly and passionately about everything from Indiana’s new discriminatory legislation to why it’s important not to looked at hacked nude photos, so it’s not surprising that he’s able to answer the anon’s question in a way that frames the issue so succinctly. No one is responsible for their parents’ prejudices, but that doesn’t mean that living with people who explicitly and implicitly put you down is easy. Green’s response is comforting without being condescending, and hopefully the anon knows that their story has resonated with not just Green’s fanbase, but the rest of the considerate Internet as well.
