Who is Joe Kennedy? The congressman will give the Democratic Party’s State of the Union response

Whether or not you tune into President Donald Trump’s State of the Union address on January 30th, you might want to listen to the response from Rep. Joe Kennedy III. The Democratic Party tapped the Massachusetts congressman to deliver the official response to Trump’s speech, and we definitely understand why.

The 37-year-old politician is currently serving his third term in Congress. And despite his famous last name, he’s been making himself known without any help from his family. He’s the grandson of late U.S. Attorney General Bobby Kennedy, son of former Rep. Joseph Kennedy, and great-nephew of former President John F. Kennedy and Sen. Ted Kennedy. He’s also got a strong track record of public service.

Before he joined Congress in 2013, Joe Kennedy was an assistant district attorney in Massachusetts and served in the Peace Corps in Latin America. He’s also got degrees from both Stanford University and Harvard University. So, he definitely knows his stuff.

While Kennedy is still a relatively new face to most Americans, his response to the president’s speech should be a powerful statement that will appeal to both working- and middle-class voters on a national scale. He’s been an outspoken Trump critic since the president took office. He’s also a strong advocate for the Affordable Care Act, immigrant and LGBTQ+ rights, and protecting the middle class.

If you haven’t seen Joe Kennedy’s speech condemning the Republicans’ vote to repeal and replace Obamacare, it’s definitely chill-inducing:

false

House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi has called him a “relentless fighter for working Americans.” Kennedy’s State of the Union response will be accompanied by Democratic Rep. Maxine Waters’ own national address on BET following the president’s speech.

The Democratic rebuttal to the State of the Union is expected to call out the president’s, erm, less-than-faithful promises to the American public. It’ll surely be worth tuning in.
