Joe Biden’s daughter launches a clothing line made entirely in the USA to benefit underserved communities
We already love the Biden family quite a bit, and now Joe Biden’s daughter, Ashley, is giving us a whole new reason! The daughter of former Vice President Joe Biden just launched a clothing line that’s actually made entirely in the U.S.A. That’s not the only cool thing about it, either: she donated proceeds to under-served American communities.
We know there’s a lot of complex trade deals and other factors that go into manufacturing. But it’s pretty amazing that Ashley decided to manufacture her clothes in the US, and even more so, that it’s not just about profitting personally.
We love it when a person’s words matches their actions. Especially if they have a hand in running the country, or have any ties to the White House. So, Ashley’s integrity seriously speaks to us.
Ashley Biden’s line of hoodies, called Livelihood (get it??), is produced exclusively for Gilt.
Ashley, a 35-year old social worker, has seen firsthand how communities can suffer from a lack of resources. For that reason, the two ZIP codes benefiting from the first round of funding are Anacostia, D.C. (Ashley’s first job posting) and Wilmington, Delaware, (her birthplace.)
As the hoodies sell, which they definitely will, Ashley’s using the profits to fund community boards that will decide which initiatives need the funding the most.
“I want a janitor, a school teacher, the local pastor, whomever is involved in the community to sit at the table and to pick the projects for economic development," Biden told Teen Vogue.
Economic development could mean anything from “education, community centers, literacy programs, tutoring, or workforce development,” she added.
The launch of the line features an interactive website, where visitors can learn about models of change that work to reduce poverty in all areas of the country.
“We're going to be talking about policy reforms needed, such as campaign finance reform, tax revisions, [and] minimum wage, Ashley said. “We're going to be talking about the importance of civic engagement participation. Because many people don't understand governance, and how it's set up."
She explains that Livelihood, unlike other brands, encourages involvement in politics on a local level. And to that we say, sign us up.
