Jody’s heartbreak is so relatable it hurts on “The Mindy Project”

Remember when Jody bought Mindy the upstairs apartment as a way to declare his love for her? Yeah, we all remember, because that was like, a month ago? But Mindy has since rejected him, decided to be on her own, and then met nurse Ben, fell for him, and changed her mind. Mindy might’ve quickly moved on, but sadly, Jody is still pretty broken up about it.

In this week’s episode of The Mindy Project, Mindy goes through some drama with nurse Ben when she finds out that he’s dating someone else on the side (eek!) and Jody is so sick of seeing Mindy happy with someone else that he considers leaving Shulman & Associates altogether.

Poor Jody

And honestly, I can’t blame him. Can you imagine having to work alongside your kind of ex/almost love after they bash your heart to smithereens and then immediately date someone else? Mindy didn’t owe him anything after he bought her that apartment, obviously, but that doesn’t mean he’s not allowed to still be crushed by her rejection.

He interviews with another practice, and when Colette confronts him about possibly leaving, he tells her that he can’t stand working with Mindy anymore. This is also while they’re at a party thrown by Jeremy to celebrate his college buddy’s success as a famous actor who has a vague role in the Avengers franchise. Oh, and this friend is named Leland Breakfast, who spends the entire evening schmoozing Mindy in front of him.

Hot mess alert

When Leland Breakfast (can’t stop saying his full name because it’s wonderfully ridiculous), hears Jody and Colette arguing, he decides to sing a song dedicated to Jody, but he thinks Jody is a woman and it rightfully embarrasses him in front of everyone. He chugs his dark alcohol, fidgets nervously, and his breakup-related anger is so relatable I can feel it from here.

SO not okay

Ultimately, Anna, the new doctor pulls him into the bathroom to talk some sense into him by calling him a “vagina” (one of the strongest muscles on a woman’s body – but okay), slaps him across the face, and then sexually assaults him by planting and unexpected (and unrequested) kiss on him. I understand that all of this is supposed to be funny, but it really wasn’t, and it did not go unnoticed. Maybe don’t make a joke of unwanted advances, no matter who is on the receiving end of it, okay, Mindy Project?

In the end, Jody decides to stay put, which is wonderful because he deserves some redemption after all of this. What’s next for him? I guess we’ll have to see.
