Jodie Whittaker made her first appearance as The Doctor on “Doctor Who,” and Twitter is loving it
Although the BBC confirmed that the next Doctor Who would be a woman earlier this year, it still felt like we had to see it to believe it. Well, Jodie Whittaker made her first appearance as The Doctor on Doctor Who over the holiday, and things got emotional AF on Twitter. It was empowering for many reasons. One being that the Christmas special marked the end of a four-year run for Peter Capaldi. It’s always hard to say goodbye to characters as beloved as he was. But what really moved audiences was the regeneration sequence. When Whittaker made her debut, she checked out her reflection and said: “Oh, brilliant!”
Not everyone thought it was a “brilliant” move by the BBC to make the thirteenth Time Lord a woman, though. Some fans on Twitter were not pleased that a woman took over. Back in July, Whittaker said in an interview with the network, “I want to tell the fans not to be scared by my gender. Because this is a really exciting time, and Doctor Who represents everything that’s exciting about change. The fans have lived through so many changes, and this is only a new, different one, not a fearful one.”
The network even got involved in trying to shut down sexist fans. They posted out a statement, reminding people that this is, after all, a science fiction show. Both on TV and IRL, men and women can do all sorts of things.
"Since the first Doctor regenerated back in 1966, the concept of the Doctor as a constantly evolving being has been central to the programme. The continual input of fresh ideas and new voices across the cast and the writing and production teams has been key to the longevity of the series. The Doctor is an alien from the planet Gallifrey and it has been established in the show that Time Lords can switch gender."
So Doctor Who fans are just going to have deal with it. Seriously, how can you hate on this?
