Jimmy Kimmel asks kids to explain same-sex marriage. Just watch.

One of the biggest concerns some parents have regarding the legalization of same-sex marriage is that their kids won’t understand it. Some parents think that it’s just too complicated to explain to their kids how love and marriage works between two people of the same gender. Even prior to SCOTUS’ decision to legalize same-sex marriage, the concern for the safety and emotional well-being of children has always been a go-to reason why many people don’t support same-sex marriage.

The well-being of children is always an absolutely legitimate reason to question things and to have concerns — but perhaps the problem is, the people questioning same-sex marriage haven’t actually talked to their kids about it. Or perhaps we’re just not giving kids enough credit. They understand (and are down with) a lot more than we think.

So Jimmy Kimmel to the rescue! Kimmel is a dad to three kids, and he wanted to know if kids are in fact not capable of understanding same-sex marriage. So since he has his own show and the ability to find out and keep us all in the loop, he sent his cameras out to the streets of New York City to find out if same-sex marriage really is too confusing for kids to understand. The results? Well, let’s just say that if same-sex marriage is confusing to anyone, it’s definitely not the kids.

A few of the kids were confused about marriage in general, because they’re kids – and sometimes kids don’t know things yet. But the same-sex part of it? Not so confusing. When asked if she thinks anyone should be able to get married, one little girl summed it up beautifully. She replied, “If you’re old enough.” Yes!
