Jill Stein is getting a recount in Wisconsin and here’s what that could mean
There’s been a lot of buzz about the election results in the days since November 8th. Lately, much of that has been focus on Green Party candidate Jill Stein and her quest for an election recount.
Over the past few days, she’s been raising millions to fund recount efforts in three different states: Wisconsin, Pennsylvania, and Michigan.
As of now, she’s up to $5.7 million, only $1.3 million away from her $7 million goal. That’s enough to fund recounts in at least two different states.
Yesterday, Stein filed in Wisconsin for a recount. Within hours, Wisconsin officially agreed.
This is big news for anyone who’s been following along. Despite hashtags like #AuditTheVote and #Recount2016 trending on social media, it was hard to believe that anything real would come of them. Especially when the Obama administration was allegedly against it.
And despite reports that HRC’s camp was distancing itself from these efforts, minutes ago the Clinton campaign announced its support.
They maintained their position about alleged hacking (they don’t think there was any), but decided in the interest of fairness that a grassroots-funded supported by the people was something they could get behind.
"This is a process, a first step to examine whether our electoral democracy is working," said Wisconsin Green Party co-chairman George Martin.
Clinton’s campaign counsel, Marc Elias, weighed in as well.
"Because we had not uncovered any actionable evidence of hacking or outside attempts to alter the voting technology, we had not planned to exercise this option ourselves, but now that a recount has been initiated in Wisconsin, we intend to participate in order to ensure the process proceeds in a manner that is fair to all sides. If Jill Stein follows through as she has promised and pursues recounts in Pennsylvania and Michigan, we will take the same approach in those states as well."
