Jessica Lange says she’s officially done with “American Horror Story”
As many American Horror Story fans already know, the hit FX series will be returning this fall to shock, scare, and generally weird us out. Many have been wondering whether Jessica Lange, star of the first four seasons, will be returning after taking a break and skipping season five.
CinemaBlend reports that the iconic actress was asked this question by Charlie Rose, and gave a super straightforward answer: “No. I think, you know, I had four years with that, four seasons, and each year was a marvelous character. Everything changed from one year to another which made it very interesting for me. But no. I think sometimes you come to the end of something and it has had its natural—.”
At which point, according to The Huffington Post, Rose cut in, mentioning how beloved Lange is by fans of the ensemble thriller. Lange responded graciously, saying, “I know, I know, it’s funny,” apparently of her decision not to return. Fans of the show, meanwhile, gave collective screams of sadness.
However, even with AHS’ shifts in story and setting season-to-season, Lange often played similar characters. And while we totally love watching her become twisted, strong women who deliver insanely good monologues, we get that she’s ready for new adventures.
And while we get the sadness AHS fans are experiencing, there are also some legitimate reasons to rejoice. For one, we know from last season’s AHS: Hotel that Lange leaving gave extra room to stars Lily Rabe, Angela Bassett, and newcomer Lady Gaga (to name a few) to shine extra brightly. Gaga won a Golden Globe for her AHS turn, and will be returning (probably in a supporting role) for Season 6.
For another, just because Lange has bowed out of AHS doesn’t mean we won’t be seeing her again soon. In fact, she’s got a collaboration with AHS creator Ryan Murphy in the works already. Feud will be an anthology series about Bette Davis and Joan Crawford, whose enmity while filming Whatever Happened to Baby Jane? is the stuff of Hollywood legend. Lange while play Crawford, while Susan Sarandon will costar as Davis.
So, while we’re definitely sad we won’t see Lange kill it in AHS again, we have a feeling we’ll still be seeing her deliver a lot of fantastic monologues in the near future.
