Time to freak out: Jessica Lange is officially back on ‘American Horror Story’

Jessica Lange is like the Jon Snow of American Horror Story: it seemed like she was gone from the show for good, but is she really? Or is there maybe the teensiest, tiiiiiniest possibility that she will return? Many of us have been clinging on to that scrap of hope, because as everyone who loves TV knows, NOTHING CAN EVER BE TRUSTED EVER. Well, AHS fans, get ready to celebrate, because it turns out that we can officially expect her back on the show.

Lange has made appearances on all four seasons, but chose to opt out of Hotel to star in a spring 2016 revival of Long Day’s Journey Into Night on Broadway (which is actually being produced by AHS co-creator Ryan Murphy). Which we can totally understand her decision, because she’s a woman of many, many talents —but for those of us who can’t get enough of her, we were pretty bummed. HOWEVER, in a recent interview with Entertainment Weekly for their cover story on the AHS‘s latest season, Murphy restored our faith in humanity by confirming that, yes, she will be returning.

“I’ve been talking to her,” Murphy told EW. “It’s always possible. I’m trying to deal with her play schedule. Jessica is always about the character. She’ll be back—she’s not gone forever.”

Did you read that right? She’ll be back. Not gone forever. OMG.

Murphy also pointed out that Lange’s temporary absence is just one of the things that makes AHS so special and beloved in its own spooky way. “. . . that’s the fun and fresh thing about the show: sometimes somebody has to go away before you realize how much you miss them,” Murphy told EW. “She wants to come back [but] we just have to come up with something.”

We don’t know how Lange’s next appearance will play out — it looks like even Murphy doesn’t know that yet. Who will she be playing next? EW speculates that, since Hotel is set five years after the first season, it’s possible that she could reappear as Constance, her evil first character that made us all fall in love with her wicked talent. It’s too early to know, but no matter what, we’re sure she’ll kick ass (while raising the hairs on the back of our necks) no matter what character she plays.

In the meantime, break a leg on Broadway, Jessica! (But not literally, please. We need you back on AHS like, yesterday.)
