“Jessica Jones” producer talks Season 2 and reminds us why we freaking love this show
Seasons 1 of Netflix’s Jessica Jones was one of the most refreshingly feminist works of television in recent memory. It dealt with themes like the realities of surviving an abusive relationship, domestic violence, and the issue of consent — not to mention it just had an all around badass, intelligent female heroine (who doesn’t ever appear in spandex we might add).
The series is also noteworthy in that the most significant relationship in Jessica’s life isn’t romantically-based, but instead revolves around best friend Trish. Which is why we’re psyched to learn that Season 2 is going to seriously delve into their dynamic.
In an interview with Entertainment Weekly, the show’s executive producer Melissa Rosenberg said, “I’m interested in continuing to explore the relationship between Trish and Jessica. That is the core relationship in the piece. It is about female friendship, it is about how friends evolve — they’re sisters, really — and it’s about how they evolve and ping off each other.”
She went on to say, “It’s an interesting dichotomy of them figuring out there’s an envy involved [in their relationship], there’s support, there’s compassion, there’s frustration.
She also gave a shout out to the fans who might want to see a little more than friendship between these two characters.
“Honestly, I love that people are seeing that. I’m fine with that. It’s not what interests me about their relationship. To me, it’s about their history, and their trust and connection.”
We’re thrilled to see a show that’s focussing on the power of female friendship, for no other reason than it reflects what’s actually important in the lives of so many real women and because it so often never gets portrayed with any real nuance or complexity on screen.
The new season isn’t set to premiere until 2018 — which is a HUGE BUMMER — but at least it’s giving us something to look forward to!
