Jennifer Lawrence released a statement about Harvey Weinstein’s abuse allegations
After multiple women bravely stepped forward to admit they were abused by film producer Harvey Weinstein, actress Jennifer Lawrence released a statement about his allegations of sexual misconduct. Weinstein co-founded Miramax and was known for producing some of Hollywood’s biggest films. He worked with Lawrence in 2012 on Silver Linings Playbook, and the two seemed to be close. Lawrence also made sure to thank him in her Golden Globes acceptance speech for the movie.
But Lawrence just made it clear: she thinks his alleged actions are absolutely disturbing.
The actress released a statement to People saying that she was unaware of any of this behavior while on set.
"I was deeply disturbed to hear the news about Harvey Weinstein's behavior. I worked with Harvey five years ago and I did not experience any form of harassment personally, nor did I know about any of these allegations. This kind of abuse is inexcusable and absolutely upsetting," she said. "My heart goes out to all of the women affected by these gross actions. And I want to thank them for their bravery to come forward."
After The New York Times initially reported that Weinstein paid off those he sexually harassed, the directors of The Weinstein Company decided to terminate his position immediately.
Meryl Streep, Kate Winslet, Glenn Close, and Judi Dench also spoke out about how Weinstein’s behavior was disgusting. In Winslet’s words, which were originally reported by Variety, “There must be ‘no tolerance’ of this degrading, vile treatment of women in any workplace anywhere in the world.”
It’s so important that people are speaking up and making it clear that predatory behavior like Harvey Weinstein’s won’t be tolerated. This happens more often than we think, and we must continue to address the fact that unwanted sexual advances should never be tolerated.
