See Jennifer Lawrence as a bratty MTV teen in her first-ever acting role
We all have to start somewhere – even Academy Award-winning actresses.
And Jennifer Lawrence, who surprises us time and again with her wit, her humility, and her crazy bow and arrow skills, started somewhere particularly hilarious: in a commercial for MTV’s My Super Sweet Sixteen. That’s right. Before she was kicking Capitol butt in The Hunger Games on the big screen, 14-year-old J-Law was gracing the small screen as a spoiled teenager trying to throw the perfect million dollar birthday party.
The two TV spots that feature Jen aired in 2005 when My Super Sweet Sixteen was ridiculously popular. Both of them have similar plotlines: extravagant party activities go very wrong during a bratty wannabe princess’ birthday blowout.
In one, all eyes are on baby Jennifer before she makes a wish on her candles.
A disco ball falls from the ceiling, pelting her and her adoring fans with globs of cake.
Jennifer’s acting is already superb. You can just tell she is bound to win an Oscar — look at those fake tears!
In the second spot, a mini J-Law makes a grand entrance to her party on a Cleopatra couch.
Her attitude is so on point. #diva
One of her minions can’t handle the weight of her talent and drops her, which must haunt him to this day.
I wonder if she did her own stunts.
These commercials debuted in 2005, and just five years later, Jennifer was nominated for an Academy Award for Winter’s Bone. In 2013, she won an armful of awards for her work in Silver Linings Playbook, including an Oscar and a Screen Actors Guild Award. Her experience getting sprayed with cake really stayed with her: She thanked MTV when she accepted the SAG award.
“I earned my SAG card when I was 14,” she explained. “I did a MTV promo for My Super Sweet 16. And I remember getting it in the mail and it being the best day in my entire life, because it officially made me a professional actor.”
How unbelievably cool: Jennifer Lawrence decided she wanted to be a professional actor at such a young age. She stuck with it, and look at all of the amazing roles and performances that have come from her perseverance. Pretty darn inspiring.
