The surprising reason why Jennifer Lawrence is disappearing from ‘Mockingjay’ posters
Look, real talk, there is no Hunger Games without Katniss Everdeen. I mean, can you imagine the Panem-verse without its fierce AF heroine? Sure, the Games would still go on, and Effie Trinket would continue to hope that the odds would be ever in District 12’s favor, but who would be the rebellion’s Mockingjay? And for that matter, how would the uprising even HAPPEN? The story needs Katniss as its protagonist, Hunger Games is not Hunger Games without the girl.
That’s why it’s so nuts to learn that in Israel, Jennifer Lawrence has been disappearing from Mockingjay: Part 2 posters. Well, not ALL of Israel, in most parts of the country (just like most parts of the world) Katniss is front and center on the poster, hair braided and bow drawn. However, in Jerusalem, Jennifer Lawrence has been removed from the posters. All that remains of the movie art is the fiery Mockingjay that, in other posters, serves as Katniss’ backdrop.
So we’re here to Nancy Drew the Mystery of the Disappearing J-Law. It didn’t take long to get to the bottom of the case. As Time reports, the reason Lawrence isn’t on her Mockingjay posters in Jerusalem is because, as one of Mockingjay: Part 2‘s Israelie PR rep explained “…public posters with the image of a female are often torn down in Jerusalem.” Meanwhile, the Israeli city of Bnei Brek “does not allow posters with female images” the same rep explained.
It is so strange to imagine a Mockingjay poster WITHOUT Katniss. And it sounds like the Israeli PR team for the movie is none too pleased about this poster change.
“Unfortunately we are subject to unofficial coercion that forces us to be more careful,” Liron Suissa, whose PR firm is in charge of the Mockingjay: Part 2 posters, told Haaretz. “We have had endless vandalization, and clients prefer not to take the chance. We allow everything, but we recommend hanging another visual when necessary. The decision is the client’s.”
