Jennifer Lawrence, a long-time fan of Catt Sadler, supports her decision to leave E! News
Taking a professional risk to stand up for what’s right is scary. But it’s nice to know that other women who’ve faced similar challenges have got your back. According to a post on Jennifer Lawrence’s Facebook page, Catt Sadler officially has the actress in her corner following Sadler’s decision to leave E! News because of a serious pay disparity with her male colleague. So now we’re not only inspired by Sadler’s bravery, but by another high-profile instance of women supporting women.
Lawrence showed her support for Sadler on December 20th by reposting Sadler’s full essay about her decision to leave E! News after 12 years and thanking the host for her honesty. Lawrence, who’s previously admitted to being a big time E! fangirl, has had her own pay equality battles play out in the headlines, so she’s definitely someone who gets what Sadler has been facing.
Sadler’s situation came about after she learned that her co-host (and close friend) Jason Kennedy was making almost twice as much as she was and went to the network to voice her frustration to no avail:
"Know your worth," Sadler wrote in the post Lawrence shared. "I have two decades experience in broadcasting and started at the network the very same year as my close friend and colleague that I adore. I so lovingly refer to him as my "tv husband" and I mean it. But how can I operate with integrity and stay on at E if they’re not willing to pay me the same as him? Or at least come close? How can I accept an offer that shows they do not value my contributions and paralleled dedication all these years? How can I not echo the actions of my heroes and stand for what is right no matter what the cost? How can I remain silent when my rights under the law have been violated?"
Lawrence famously demanded that she be paid $20 million for her role alongside Chris Pratt in Passengers after learning that her male costars in American Hustle had pulled in far bigger bucks for themselves than she or Amy Adams had. Sadler’s now following in her fierce footsteps and we can’t wait to see what incredible work these two women create — and get paid appropriately for — next.
