Obsessing over this very first pic of the real life ‘Jem and the Holograms’ movie
Ok, it’s time to talk about more about Jem and the Holograms. In case you somehow still don’t know about the majesty that is this gal group, Jem and the Holograms was an ’80s cartoon about the best girl band that ever was. It is a cult legend and now, because Hollywood has decided to fill our souls with joy, it’s being turned into a movie with real people. Amazing on every single level.
Anyway! Today we have our VERY FIRST still from the upcoming movie which stars Aubrey Peeples (who we have fallen for on Nashville), Stefanie Scott and Hayley Kiyoko. I mean just look at this image of Jem, Kimber and Aja rockin’ it. Look at the costumes. Look at the makeup. Look at the hair. Look at the GUITARS.
If this weren’t enough, do you know who else stars in this movie? Juliette Lewis AND Molly Ringwald. Sign us up right now. Also, this GIF pretty much sums up how we feel.
Here’s what else we know about the flick. The premise is that Jerrica Benton (aka Aubrey Peeples) is a total YouTube sensation as her rockstar alter-ego Jem. She plays her music alongside her band (the Holograms) who in this version also happen to be her sisters. It sounds like in the movie the foursome will go from a viral teen hit to global superstars. We are IN.
We should mention though, there’s been a little backlash about a plot change. This updated version turns Jem into a teenager, while the Jem and the Holograms of yore had Jem as the CEO of her own badass record company. Does this change disempower her, as some have suggested? Or make her story even more relatable? The jury is still out.
In the meantime, we are practicing our ’80s hair, David Bowie eye makeup, and Jem rockstar moves. We have until October 23 to get everything down pat.
