Jay Z just released a powerful song called “Spiritual” about police brutality
This has been a hard week for America. On July 5th and 6th, respectively, two black men named Alton Sterling and Philando Castile were stopped and killed by police. Last night, five cops were killed during a protest in Dallas, Texas. These events are weighing heavy on the heart of the world, and so some of us are turning to music for comfort. Jay Z feels similarly, and has released a song called “Spiritual” about police brutality.
Released on Tidal but available for anyone to hear, “Spiritual” was written back in 2014 after the death of Mike Brown, but Jay Z wasn’t ready to release it. Unfortunately, in 2016 its sentiments still hold true. “I’m saddened and disappointed in THIS America — we should be further along,” Jay Z said in a statement, according to Popcrush. “WE ARE NOT.”
“I trust God and know everything that happens is for our greatest good, but man… it’s tough right now,” he added. “Blessings to all the families that have lost loved ones to police brutality.”
Jay Z’s song came just a few hours after Beyoncé, his wife, made a statement of her own on her website:
“We are sick and tired of the killings of young men and women in our communities,” her statement began. “It is up to us to take a stand and demand that they ‘stop killing us.’ We don’t need sympathy. We need everyone to respect our lives.”
