Jay-Z has admitted that his relationship with Beyoncé wasn’t built on “100 percent truth”
In a new short film to accompany his new album, Jay-Z has opened up about his marriage to Beyoncé and shared some of the struggles of their high-profile relationship.
There has been intense speculation about Beyoncé and Jay-Z’s relationship since Queen Bey released her groundbreaking album Lemonade last year. On the record, the singer appeared to address an alleged infidelity in her relationship, a move which led many people to speculate about the true identity of “Becky with the good hair.”
Bey and Jay have been busier than ever recently. The couple just welcomed two new Beybies into their lives, just as Jay released a brand new album, 4:44 (and underwent another name change, too).

As well as releasing an album, Jay-Z has also released some mini-documentaries, one called Footnotes for “The Story of O.J,” which dealt with the black experience in America, and another new one titled Footnotes for 4:44, which, as People has reported, features candid conversations about relationships, including interviews with the likes of Chris Rock, Jesse Williams, Kendrick Lamar, Mahershala Ali, Meek Mill, and Will Smith.
In the video, which premiered exclusively on Tidal, Jay seems to address his relationship with Beyoncé, speaking about how their marriage nearly came to an end and how they recovered from that.
"This is my real life," he said in the clip. "I just ran into this place and we built this big, beautiful mansion of a relationship that wasn't totally built on the 100 per cent truth and it starts cracking. Things started happening that the public can see."
Continuing, the rapper said that they had to figure out how to re-build things.
“We had to get to a point of ‘OK, tear this down and let’s start from the beginning’… it’s the hardest thing I’ve ever done,” he said.
Later, it appears that Jay-Z says that the near-breakdown of his marriage was harder than growing up in Marcy Projects. As The Independent report, he then recalled the moment he asked Beyoncé to stay.
“What is happening to my body right now? Did I just say, ‘Don’t leave?’ All this is new for me,” he said.
While it appears that Jay-Z doesn’t do it directly, people have highlighted various moments in 4:44 in which it appears that the rapper is responding directly to Bey’s Lemonade and his family. In fact, the album is a family affair, with his daughter Blue Ivy featured on track, and with one producer saying that Beyoncé also had input on the collection.
While we’ll never know the ins-and-outs of what went down between the Carters, it seems that on his new album, Jay-Z is exorcizing some demons from his life, something that’s certainly brave to do in such a public way.
