Jared Leto just made a big promise about his Joker in ‘Suicide Squad’

In case you’ve avoided the Internet completely for the past, oh, year, then the fact that there’s a Suicide Squad movie in the works might surprise you. Otherwise, you already know that Jared Leto is playing The Joker, a role last embodied by Heath Ledger in The Dark Knight, and that Leto’s taken a slightly different approach to the infamous villain, and that that approach is a slimy/skeletal/glam (I can’t believe I’m writing this) vibe. A little unexpected, to be honest. And everyone has their own opinion about it. However, Leto just made a big promise about his Joker turn, and I don’t think I’m the only one thinking, “Careful, J-man. Expectations can be a tricky thing.”

Posted yesterday on Instagram, the photo was not actually created by Leto — he credits IG user @gaunted for the Photoshopped image. It features both Heath Ledger, who passed away tragically in 2008, and Jack Nicholson, the original 1989 Joker, with a very, um, hauntingly optimistic message:

The Joker is one of the more challenging roles in recent film history. Ledger, for one, reportedly holed up in a hotel room for months, creating a diary in the voice of his character. He struggled to move past the character and eventually won a posthumous Oscar for his role.

Leto has also intensely dedicated himself to this role. Method acting, when it comes to a psychopathic clown, is probably not the easiest thing, and several of his co-stars have spoken out about his serious commitment to the character.

With the Joker’s legacy in mind, it seems that Leto is putting his heart into the role—and more importantly, a twisted smile on his face.
