Janis Joplin’s Porsche is everything we hoped it would be
Back in the day, the late, great Janis Joplin lamented, “My friends all drive Porsches, I must make amends.” And so she did. At the height of her success (she was still in her 20s, mind you) she purchased a Porsche of her own, and then totally put her stamp on it.
Joplin’s 1965 Porsche 356 C 1600 was purchased in 1968, and in Pimp My Ride fashion, one of Joplin’s roadies revamped the entire thing, including painting the exterior of the car, because Joplin thought it was “boring” as is. What she ended up with was a bright and beautiful mural, featuring butterflies, jellyfish, and images of her and her band, Big Brother and the Holding Company. With Joplin, would you expect anything less than this unique creation?
According to Joplin’s sister, Laura, she drove it all up and down California, and as she told Reuters, “wherever Janis went in the car, her fans recognized it. When she parked it and returned, there was always at least one note under the wipers.”
After Joplin’s passing in 1970, the car was driven by her manager until the ’90s, before it was handed over to her family. They then loaned it to the Rock and Roll hall of Fame. But now, IT CAN BE YOURS. It is up for auction at Sotheby’s auction house in December.
However, your love for Joplin will set you back quite a lot. Sotheby’s believes it will go for around $400,000, if not more. Remember, it’s an auction. The actual price for it could go way, waaaay up.
But let’s not put a price on anything Joplin touched. She was a groundbreaking vocalist who influenced music, as we know it, in immeasurable ways. Though her life was tragically cut short, her legacy lives on, and so does her sweet, sweet ride.
